3 Truths to Cling to Amid Suffering

1. Jesus went through it first. Jesus Christ, being fully God and fully man, was tempted in every way as we are and suffered considerably more than we do. The Bible says that he was a man “familiar with sorrows” and “acquainted with “grief” (Isaiah 53:3). Jesus suffered not so that we wouldn’t have to, but so that when we do, our suffering would be meaningful — namely, for his glory. He knows our pain and we can find strength in him to get through our suffering.

2. It’s all for our good and God’s glory. The promises of Romans 8:28-29 can get the believer through anything! God is sovereignly orchestrating all that happens to us. No pain can thwart us apart from his sovereign permission which he already perfectly decreed in eternity pass. God knows and foresees all things and no suffering comes to our life apart from his OK. And not only that, the suffering is actually a blessing! This is true for many reasons, but mainly because God uses the suffering to make us more like Jesus, the suffering servant.

3. One day it will be over. The suffering will one day come to an end. The suffering is temporary; eternity is forever. Life on earth is short; time in eternity never ends. When Jesus’ elect meet him, he will wipe away every tear they experienced from pain from their face and death, suffering, sickness, and sin will cease. Think about it. An ETERNITY spent in Heaven with Jesus in perfection where there is no sin or suffering. The more we think, hope, and mediate on that, the more joyful we we be able to make it through our current, temporary sufferings.

Cling to those three truths in the seasons of suffering and and let’s bank all the Apostle Paul’s words: “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.” (Romans 8:18)

The price is hefty. The reward is sweet.

  1. I always enjoy your blog posts. So short and to the point. I’d also like to add that the Christian world view grasps suffering very well. It believes it is bad, it is a problem and also.. it was not to be that way in the beginning
